TikTok Shop is now available in the UK, and “earn from affiliate links” is all over your feed. Here is how the money works and what is realistic for a beginner.
How it works
You promote products from TikTok Shop sellers. When someone buys through your video or link, you earn a commission. The seller sets the rate, which can range widely, though reported typical rates are around 5% to 20%.
The maths
One estimate puts the average creator commission at about 13%. On a $40 sale that is roughly $5. To earn $500 in a month you would need around 100 sales at that price, which is a lot of sales for someone just starting out. For comparison, that one $5 commission is about what 12,000 TikTok views might pay through the Creator Rewards programme.
What the “earnings” articles claim
You will see claims of small accounts earning hundreds a month and larger ones earning thousands. Be careful. One analysis noted that many of these benchmarks trace back to a cluster of SEO sites with no disclosed method. We could not verify them, so we are not repeating specific income figures as fact.
Things that cut your earnings
- Returns and cancelled orders reduce or remove your commission.
- Competition on popular products is heavy.
- Samples can cost you money or time.
- Commission rates and rules can change.
What helps
- Pick a niche you know and products you would genuinely buy.
- Show the product in use. Honest demos tend to convert better than hype.
- Always say you earn commission. UK advertising rules expect affiliate content to be clearly labelled.
Should you try it?
If you already post videos and have a small, engaged audience, it costs little to test with a handful of products. Keep a simple record of views, clicks and commission for the first couple of months, so you can see honestly whether it is worth your time.
A realistic first month
If you want to test the scheme without wasting weeks, set yourself a small, clear experiment. Choose three to five products you already use or would happily buy, and make eight to ten honest videos showing them in real use. Keep a note of views, link clicks, orders and returns for each product. Expect small numbers at first, and do not judge the scheme on a single video. After a month you will know which products people respond to, whether returns are eating into your commission and whether it is worth carrying on. If the numbers are tiny, you have lost a few evenings rather than money.
Our verdict
TikTok Shop is a real way to earn, but not a quick one. Expect months of testing before you see steady sales, and treat any promise of fast income with suspicion.
